SOCIAL MEDIA: SHOULD NBA REGULATE THE LEARNED?

The President
Nigerian Bar Association

Yesterday I read yet another Facebook post from a learned person (I will not disclose the gender because I want to protect the writer(s)) – the person wrote on immorality online.  Despicable.  The citizen was one of those the Nigerian Bar Association had recommended to the head of a court (won’t mention the court) for appointment to the Bench.

The person wasn’t the first, NBA may issue  guidelines for lawyers on social media. Do not issue a guideline on immunity from criticism, as you know that is a constitutional law infraction.
Guidelines for Lawyers on social media to include:
1.   Do not use ‘s’ language for example a junior lawyer based in Kaduna in the Ministry of Justice a state Counsel wrote on his Facebook wall that he would usually consume alcohol  and would get one of the Northern “p”. In US or UK such a Lawyer would face disbarment proceedings.

2.   Another wrote Sunday was Father’s Day and the person mocked wife beaters  which is okay but on the person’s Facebook wall was the word some fathers do not deserve to be cos they just donate sperms to women who carry their babies. Disgusting!

3.   When non-lawyers use obscene language lawyers who are the leading lights should not be applauding them.

CONCLUSION:
Make no mistake about it the campaign for gender equality must be pursued with vigour; the campaign against child abuse must be sustained and intensified.

The campaign against battery and all forms of violence against women are human rights issues must be pursued enthusiastically until these vices are stamped out. It is not about being anti-men or pro-women; it is a national and international obligation approved by the United Nations.
