Rights Group Calls on NBA, Others for Court Boycott Over Disregard to Rulings
President Muhammadu Buhari

- Commends Ajie for resignation petition

The coalition of Human Rights Groups and Civil Society Organisations
has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and other concerned
bodies to boycott court proceedings as a form of protest of ‘flagrant
disobedience’ of court orders and rulings by the President Muhammadu
Buhari-led administration.
The Southeast Based Coalition Of Human Rights Organizations (SBCHROs)
and its coordinating partner: Intersociety, in a statement made
available on Wednesday, warned that the country is fast descending to
tyranny and anarchy.
According to the group, the statements by Buhari during the maiden
Presidential media chat, which seems to support the continued disregard
to court orders is a violation of the 1999 constitution and a threat to
the nation's democracy.
They commended the NBA for condemning the actions of the Presidency and
relevant prosecuting agencies with regard to the rule of law and court
rulings, and as wells that of the human rights and constitutional
lwayer, Ms Carol Ajie, who launched an online petition at change.org,
asking the President to respect the rule of law or resign.
Not satisfied, the group has called on NBA further checkmate what it
describes as acts of dictatorship by the current administration through
boycott of court proceedings.
They urged "Nigerians should also not lose sleep or express surprises
over recent or ongoing public antics and pro-dictatorial comments of the
Attorney General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), and
the likes of Prof Itse Sagay (SAN) and Senator Ali Ndume, Senate
Majority Leader; rather all Nigerians particularly the NBA and other
democratic forces should concern themselves sleeplessly with how to rise
up endlessly against the resurrected dictatorship and its destructive
forces".
Part of the statement read: "It is also extremely important to note that the engine house of the national interest is executive obedience to court orders and protection and preservation of the citizens’ constitutional liberties. Justification of executive disobedience to court orders as a protection of national interest is abominable and impeachable. It is also a deliberate ploy to bend the law and impeach the 1999 Constitution. Disobedience to court decisions is one of the dimensions of corruption and a gross abuse of office; contrary to Section 15 (5) of the 1999 Constitution.
