Her Excellency the Wife of
the President Mrs Aishat Buhari,
we read in Daily Trust
that on Friday 18th Dec.,
2015, you launched a radio station in Lagos for women WFM 91.7 with a focus on the
promotion of women and children’s welfare, the first radio station totally dedicated to women
and children’s programs tagged WFM 91.7
to improve maternal health. As you know one million
Nigerian women die every year from child births. Nigeria accounts for 14% of all
annual maternal deaths worldwide second only to India at 17%. Nigeria also accounts
for 13% of all global deaths of children under the age of 5 years, second only
to India at 21%.
Thanks my Lady for the launch of the
radio station and urge you to present the position of the Guest Speaker Mrs
Folorunsho Alakija at the event where she said in her words, women must shun all tendencies that portray
them as weak. She flayed the apparent marginalization of women in the political
and decision-making processes in the society despite the persistent call for
affirmative action, 35% representation.
Suffice it to say President Buhari Nigeria’s
political leader ceded a bare 15% to women in his government and the states
have not improved on his bad precedent. Look in the direction of Rwanda. Prior to Rwandan gender revolution,
women had 10-15% in elected positions. In Nigeria, we have 7% in parliament and
the numbers keep going down.
I think to inspire
the struggle, they should have
named the first radio station for women after a gender legend living or
dead bearing in mind that we have gender legends in Nigeria
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Margaret Ekpo, Hajia Gambo even Queen Amina of
Zaria or
you, your Excellency Aisha Buhari.
In concluding: Women must stand with each
other and promote our heroines that is how heroes get recognition.
Thank you
Attorney CN Ajie
